To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day 2018 find out 10 facts about women in UK engineering jobs.*
- 11% of the UK engineering workforce is female.
- 5% of registered engineers and technicians (i.e. CEng, IEng, EngTech) are women.
- The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe, at 11%. Meanwhile Latvia, Bulgaria and Cyprus lead with nearly 30%.
- 1% of engineering and technology undergraduates in the UK are female. Whereas in India, over 30% of engineering students are women.
- The proportion of young women studying engineering and physics has remained virtually the same for eight years.
- Companies are 15% more likely to perform better if they are gender diverse.
- In 2015/ 2016 women accounted for 6.8% of engineering and manufacturing apprentices.
- Around 20% of A-Level physics students are girls. This has not changed in 25 years.
- There is now very little gender difference in the take up of, and achievement in, core STEM GCSE subjects.
- Women and men engineering and technology students express similar levels of intent to work in engineering and technology. However 71% of the men and 60% of the women graduates in 2016 went on to work in engineering and technology.
